Dave Hawes. *sigh* With my little sigh, you can see how unprofessional this page is, lol. I figured I'd make this personal.. Seeing as how, "personal", is the way many have taken the news.
Dave was let go from the band in Novemeber 99. He wasn't allowed to let anyone know about it until Feb.2000 due to "contractual issues". Why was he let go? The band's response: "lack of chemistry" Dave's response: "chemistry is hard to create when you're not allowed in
the chemistry lab." *pout* .. Dave had no part in the recording of Wishville. The bass on the album was provided by Tim Friese Green, Rob (?!?!), and supposedly an Atari (even more ?!?!?!?!'s) I'm not even going to comment on what I think of all that.
Dave was a very very big part of what made Catherine Wheel special to many of us. On stage, he was always smiling, looking in the crowd, waving to anyone who waved (or waving at ya anyway!). Off stage, no contest- the most approachable member of the band. It'll be damn hard to find anyone who can't agree with the fact that, Dave really enjoyed the fans. He was such a sweet guy to us, and you'd leave with this cozy lil feeling thinking "Such a nice guy.. Its nice to know a band cares about their fans." (Not saying Brian, Neil, and Rob haven't always been gracious.. but there was something about Dave. He really went the extra mile). He'd also be the one to personally write you back if you snail mailed them, or email you back if you signed the guestbook at their Official page. He took the time, and we appreciated every minute of it. I think the only time I truly saw Dave get mad at anyone.. Was when the bouncers at Lee's Palace (in 1996) wouldn't let us in to the venue cos we were too young, so Dave got all mad and caused a ruckus.. But they still wouldn't let us in :P Thanks for trying Dave :-)
Seeing CW perform without him recently, just wasn't the same. All the old songs, were very bittersweet. It was really weird seeing someone else in Dave's spot (nothing against Ben.. it doesn't matter who would have been in that spot.. from Dr.Seuss to the Atari itself). I was starting to feel like I was alone in all of this.. But after the show, a bunch of us were talking, and we all pretty much echoed each other's thoughts. It's nice to know that I'm not losing it ;-)
Anyways.. Although there is nothing I can do, I figured this is the least I can do. We wish you the bestest of luck Dave, and we all (especially the Toronto Texturites!) will miss you SO very much. You were the warmth of CW, and it just won't be the same without you.
